[QW3] Don’t confuse ‘I’ and ‘me’

by | Jul 18, 2020

[ Quick Win posts – QWs – are brief items to help non-overwhelm your day. Enjoy! ]

One of the most difficult things to get right in sentences is ‘I’ and ‘me.’

[QW3] Don’t confuse ‘I’ and ‘me’

Let me show you two correct examples, and then explain the method I use to get it right e-v-e-r-y time!

“Dave and I went to the store.”

“That was a great idea for Dave and me.”

Did that second one throw you a curveball?

Split the sentence to figure out if it would be ‘I’ or ‘me.’

You’ll know immediately which one doesn’t sound correct.

For the first example (“Dave and I went to the store”):

“Dave went to the store.”
“I went to the store.”

For the second example (“That was a great idea for Dave and me”):

“That was a great idea for Dave.”
“That was a great idea for me.”

It’s a little easier than you thought, because

We would never say, “That was a great idea for I.”

Quickly pull a sentence apart in your head, and you’re set.

It takes practice, but you can do it!

People still catch me thinking through these.

I can see it on their faces.

It makes them feel better that I have to do this, too. 😉
