[QW4] ‘Democratic’ vs. ‘Democrat’

by | Aug 15, 2020

[ Quick Win posts – QWs – are brief items to help non-overwhelm your day. Enjoy! ]

Okay, pet peeve time.

We in the U.S. are ramping up to an election in early November.

And I guarantee: we will hear and see the word ‘democratic‘ misused 99% of the time between now and then.

Well … forever, really.

Few of us – including grammar pundits and the Democrat Party! – remember what’s correct.

That’s a bummer.

[QW4] ‘Democratic’ vs. ‘Democrat’

Here’s a quick overview:

‘Democratic’ = a process

‘Democrat’ = a political party or an adherent to its principles

Democratic (Process)

America is a democratic republic.

We elect people to vote the way we would on issues and send them to Washington D.C. or to our statehouses.

Here are two sentences using the term ‘democratic’ properly:

“It was a democratic move on their part since they let the students vote.”

“Let’s be democratic about this.”

Democrat (Political party or adherent to the party)

Here are three sentences using the word ‘Democrat’ correctly.

“My dad was a Democrat, and my mom usually voted Republican, so election years were interesting in my house!”

“The Democrat senator held a rally on Saturday morning.”

“The 2020 Democrat convention may occur online.”

So, there we go! Quick and easy, [QW4].

Please help me stay tantrum-free: don’t switch ‘democratic’ and ‘democrat.’ 😎

Yes! This irritates me too. I have to listen/read this error every day. I’ve considered sending emails or twittering to some of the offenders but haven’t made time for the effort, yet. Thanks for bringing this to light.

      Oh … good.

      It isn’t just me!

Please share to your FB, LI, and others.

It will take an effort, but – I suppose – there’s no time like the present to start this crusade!

Thanks for stopping by, Norman, and for taking the time to contribute,

      K.
