Stay ahead on your projects!

by | Sep 8, 2026

Friends kid me about my staying several months ‘out’ with creating my blog and social media posts. But, I’ve built that into my process to add peace and calm to my work. (For example, I wrote the first draft of this article looong before it ended up here. 😊)

If you follow my lead, you might discover it’s easier to:

  • Non-overwhelm your schedule (and who doesn’t need that?!).
  • Fix issues before ‘crunch time.’
  • Take advantage of an unforeseen opportunity or correct a glitch.

Staying ahead of the curve isn’t easy

When I pivoted to mentoring others on non-overwhelm, I created six months’ worth of blog posts to help people dump the ‘always-on’ mindset.

  • Was all that writing and editing easy?

No. I was ‘working for the man,’ and had limited free time.

  • Did I work constantly to get there?

No. See the first bullet. 😊

  • Did I provide a logical timeline?

Yes, I’d learned that good-health-lesson the hard way!

“Hope for the best. Plan for the worst.”

Those statements came from each of our professors when I was earning my Master of Project Management degree.

  • Hope for the best

Think about the finish line before starting the race. This is an exciting time, because we just started a project. We’re energized to get there, and hope is high. But, it’s good to consider the ‘go-wrong factors’ before we begin.

And that’s where the ‘plan for the worst’ comes in ….

  • Map out the worst-case scenario

A blog post, that difficult staff meeting at work, or planning the 200-attendee family reunion for next summer, there will be a delivery point. And things could go wrong while we’re en route.

Seek input from those who have ‘been there’ to help smooth the way. What is the worst that could happen … and how might we mitigate those issues?

We can’t ‘have it all’ all at once

Since I stay so far ahead of schedule, a sick website or a surprise opportunity rarely sidelines my work. But, depending on your stage of life, you may not have that work-ahead luxury.

Take heart.

Here’s an encouraging example of how good planning can eliminate obstacles and help you stay on track. A longer track, perhaps, but hey! 😊

A friend of mine started her very-hands-on-with-clients copywriting business while her two kids were under the age of five. She explains,

“It was exhausting, but when they were napping, I was working.” Her kids had their mom, and she had her business.

The children are more self-sustaining now (ha!), and my buddy has more time for the company.

She became an expert at the idea that different life stages = different levels of involvement.

Depending on your current life phase, just getting projects done might be difficult right now. I get that. I’ve been where you are.

But, as I mentioned … I didn’t get to ‘staying ahead’ overnight.

Please hang in there and remember a valuable lesson I learned along the way:

There’s usually an option for ‘later.’
